War est une chanson écrite par Norman Whitfield et Barrett Strong pour le label Motown en 1969 et enregistrée, dans un premier temps, par les Temptations pour leur album, Psychedelic Shack (1970). Mais suite au succès immédiat rencontré par cet hymne anti-guerre, la Motown décide de sortir la chanson en 45 tours, et pour ne pas froisser le public des Temptations, la fait ré-enregistrer par Edwin Starr. Elle figurera sur son album War & Peace (1970).
