"Écrite avec son frère Bill, par Agnès 'Sis' Cunningham, organisatrice du syndicat Southern Tenant Farmers, membre des Almanac Singers, co-éditrice du magazine Broadside, et elle-même réfugiée du Dust Bowl.
My Oklahoma Home est une des plus négligées des chansons folk contemporaines. Avant cet enregistrement, seul Pete Seeger (via un enregistrement de 1961, paru dans l'anthologie de 1996, Link in the Chain) l'a enregistrée de manière commerciale. Selon les informations réimprimées dans les notes de The Best of Broadside: 1962-1988, Bill a écrit les paroles à l'époque où Pete a enregistré la chanson. Sis Cunningham l'a publiée en 1967, quelques mois après la mort de son frère, dans le numéro 80 de la revue Broadside, avec une introduction à moitié parlée, qui replace toute la chanson entre guillemets.
Sis et son frère, tout comme le mari de Sis, Gordon Freisen, ont vécu en personne le Dust Bowl en Oklahoma. Bill Cunningham dirigeait le Projet Fédéral pour les Auteurs durant les années 1830. Après la perte de la ferme familiale à Watongo, Sis a déménagé à Oklahoma City et a épousé Friesen. Le couple appartenait ouvertement au Parti Communiste et faisait campagne. En 1941, Sis Cunningham et Freisen ont été littéralement chassés de la ville dans une cruelle Peur rouge. Ils ont rejoint les Almanac Singers à New York et Sis partait parfois en tournée avec Woody Guthrie, qui tenait en grande estime sa chanson, How Can You Keep on Movin' Unless You Migrate. Mais après la Deuxième Guerre Mondiale, le couple a été blacklisté et est devenu virtuellement sans ressource, vivant souvent grâce aux allocations, dans leur maison délabrée. Sis a travaillé un temps comme secrétaire de Pete Seeger, dans les années 1960.
Broadside, dont les fondateurs étaient Seeger, la compositrice Malvina Reynolds et Cunningham, était à peine viable. Les éditeurs se focalisaient sur les chansons dont le thème était politique, une thématique que Sing Out, le journal de folk music, leader sur le marché, ignorait constamment.
