La version studio de Be True a été enregistrée le 18 juillet 1979, au studio Power Station (New York, NY), et retravaillée le 22 avril 1980, par Bruce Springsteen (voix, guitare), Max Weinberg (batterie), Garry Tallent (basse), Danny Federici (orgue, glockenspiel), Roy Bittan (piano), Steve Van Zandt (guitare) et Clarence Clemons (saxophone, tambourin). Cette chanson est parue pour la première fois sur la face B du single Fade Away/Sherry Darling (1981), utilisant la même piste musicale, mais avec un arrangement différent.
