"J'ai enregistré Johnny Bye-Bye pour un album, qui devait suivre Nebraska. J'ai tellement adoré faire Nebraska, que j'ai poursuivi dans cette veine avant de faire marche arrière pour faire Born in the U.S.A. J'avais écrit une série de chansons, avec une petite section rythmique, mais elles étaient principalement acoustiques. Johnny Bye-Bye et Shut Out The Light viennent toutes les deux de ces sessions que j'ai enregistré dans mon garage en Californie. Il y avait quasiment un album entier, que je n'ai finalement pas sorti, et ce sont les meilleurs chansons de ces sessions-là" (Los Angeles Times, 1998)
